100000 Lanterns

As the rainy season is coming to an end and the winter season is approaching, the destination for many travelers is likely to be in the northern region. People want to experience the cold weather, fog, and explore the mountains together. However, aside from the weather and geography, the art and culture of the northern region are equally fascinating. Towards the end of the year, there are also many grand festivals awaiting to be experienced in the northern region.

Lamphun Loikratong

One of the prominent festivals during this period in the northern region is the ” 100,000 lanterns festival,” a famous festival in Lamphun Province. It is a part of the larger Loi Kratong or “Yi-Peng” Festival in the northern dialect. During this festival, countless lanterns are made to pay homage to the relics of Phra That Hariphunchai and to offer respect to Phra Nang Chamthewi, the first ruler of Lamphun City. It is believed that the light from the lanterns will bring prosperity and brightness to life. Every year during the Yi Peng Festival, people in the Lanna region decorate their homes with beautifully crafted lanterns to create a bright and joyful atmosphere. Besides the traditional Lanna lanterns, there are also various international lanterns that participate in this event, and lantern processions are organized as well.
