The Bridge over the River Kwai is the most important bridge on the Death Railway constructed during World War II by the Japanese army, with an estimated 61,700 Allied prisoners of war and forced laborers, including Chinese, Burmese, Javanese, Thai, and Indian. It was built as part of a strategic railway line to connect to Myanmar, and at one point, it had to span the mighty Kwai River, necessitating the construction of the bridge. Building the bridge and the railway was filled with hardships, the brutality of war, diseases, and food shortages, resulting in the loss of many lives. After the war, the Thai government rebuilt the bridge using rectangular steel in 1946, making it operational again.
